Don’t Buy Genuine Brother Toners!,
This printer is great and worth 5 stars based on the printer’s abilities alone, seriously, but Brother is a apparently “very enthusiastic” about regularly (and frequently) replacing half-full toners with new Genuine Brother toners, to the tune of about $70-80 each. Yeah, right. I happily bought a refill kit which has worked fantastically in both volume and print quality. I’m not changing, nor am I wasting an extra $150-$200 every 2-3 months for my toners.
I’m writing this review because a Brother Customer Support Technician wouldn’t help me reset my toners. After hearing his lecture on Genuine Brother Toners and his adamant denial to help, I offered him an analogy. I simply asked if he went to a car dealership for “Genuine” oil, brakes, service, etc. EVERY TIME he had his car serviced. He of course had no answer after recognizing his own hypocrisy. So, to help others that may end up in my situation, here’s how to reset your toners.
If you have the starter cartridges, you will need to buy a refill kit of some sort, and a flag gear, or reset gear (see below for links). If that is done and you are still receiving the “Replace Toner” message, here’s what to do:
1- Turn on printer
2- Open front door to access toners
3- Hit the “Start” button for the Black and White copies on the right side of control panel
4- Quickly type in the number “10″ on the numerical keypad (1 then 0, quickly in succession)
5- You will see a toner menu. Simply pick you color(s) and capacities and reset as needed.
You can now refill your toners to a high capacity level for about $20 each, vs. $80 for “genuine brother” toners. Your cost per page probably dropped to about 3 cents each.

Print quality on multiple types of paper is just as good as “Genuine Brother” starter toners. The photo print quality of this color laser printer is lacking, but that is true for most color laser printers.

|Ahhh, MFC-9970 is better than the MFC-9840CDW,
I just received my Brother MFC-9970CDW a little under a week ago. So far, the print quality is significantly better than what I experienced with the Brother MFC-9840. It’s almost night and day with regard to color quality. I never liked the quality of the 9840, but the 9970 provides me with much greater color quality. They certainly made an improvement in this area.
The 9970 touch screen is nice to have also. It’s not a “Wow” factor for me, but it’s something different, but nothing to be desired.
The 9970 seems to be made with cheaper quality plastics, which seems to make the printer a bit more fragile, but we’ll see how it holds up…I’ve only had it for less than a week. But with that said, the 9970 also seems to be a bit more (and only a bit more) slim compared to the 9840.
My only problem thus far with the MFC-9970 is that the installation cd that came with the printer did not work properly on my Windows XP laptop. I had to go to Brother website and download the most recent installation drivers and software package. This delayed my setup of the printer a bit, because I had to restart at least two times before I realized I should just try the Brother website. Once I did, I didn’t have any other problems installing the printer drivers.
I can now use my printer for business presentations and not having to run to Staples or Kinkos because the 9840 color print jobs were too embarrassing to show any client. Glad I took another chance with Brother with the 9970 because I’ll finally get my money’s worth.
I haven’t really checked out the Control Center 4 that comes with this printer model, but hopefully they’ve made some improvements here too.
I’d recommend this printer to a small business looking for an all-in-one copy/print/scan/fax solution.

|Great printer, confusing setup,
Great label printer. Fast, reliable, and quiet. A bit bulky but the size makes it easy to change the label.
Note about setting up printer for postage:
I bought this printer to print folder labels and postage. Folder labels was easy enough but postage proved difficult. I read on a forum that you could print USPS click and ship postage. Signed up on USPS and spent a few hours trying to fit the postage image onto the label. Finally, a search revealed that paypal has this functionality. I signed into paypal and under Profile -> shipping settings set the printer settings to ql-550 (ql-570 not listed but it’s okay). It gives you a heads up that you need Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment to print labels to your label printer and points to you a link for the no longer unsupported J2SE JRE from 2005 that no longer works. You do need Java Run Time Environment but can use the newer one. You can get it by searching for JRE or get the older one by searching J2SE JRE.
Then I went into Label Printing Application found under Aution Tools tab -> PayPal MultiOrder Shipping and printed two labels. Wasted about 1 foot of labels trying to get them to print. Then finally realized there is another setting inside this MultiOrder Shipping App under Edit -> Settings. I set this to the ql-550 and hit the “Reprint” button (next to View Details…) under the History tab. I wasted another foot of continuous label trying to print the labels. Then realized that reprinting keeps the original printing formatting. Had to void out the labels and /really/ re-print them (luckily I didn’t have to refill in the shipping details). Very annoying experience. end rant.
1. Download Java http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp
2. Create or login your Paypal Account
3. Click auction tools -> free MultiOrder Shipping
4. If Getting Started pops up click Close
5. Click Edit -> Settings -> Print Settings -> Label Printer, and choose ql-550. (Also I unchecked packing slips and receipt. Packlist comes up after printing labels and you can choose your regular printer)
6. Click Ok
7. You are done. Click File -> Create New Order
Also, turn off pop-up blocker before trying to print and you might want to change your OS’s “Printer Preferences” paper size to the correct value so you don’t have to do this everytime you print. The default is wrong for the ql-570.
This is a big feature for the ql series so they should have some better documentation but it is equally paypals fault for poor documentation.

|Brother QL-570 lends professionalism to your business,
I got this a few weeks ago and I’ve been enjoying beautiful label printing since. While Brother has many label printers, this model is all you really need. It was actually recommended by a Brother reptile
at Macworld.
Set-up was easy and I’m using it with both Mac Leopard and Windows Vista and I’ve experienced no problems printing whatsoever. The Windows software has more features than the Mac side and feels “slicker” too.
The QL-570 prints fast and silent. It’s a little bigger than you would expect, but that’s due to the easy-to-change label cartridges, which are a big plus.

|Great little printer,
I use this printer on a Mac with OS X 10.5, and it works great. I think of new uses for the labels just about every day. Its super fast, and changing labels or tape is a snap. They come in a cartridge that just drops into the printer. The printer reads the label size so its available to the software.
One other nice thing about this printer is lots of type of labels and tape. There is circle labels, squares, big ones and small ones, and continuous tape in both paper and film.
One slight negative is that the software doesn’t make it as easy to enter a POSTNET barcode as it should. You need to manually enter the zip code and manually position the bar code. Not terrible, but not as nice as the rest of the software.
Overall this is a great printer, durable, and you will love it.
